Liputan6.com, Maine – The search for the suspect in the mass shooting in Maine, United States, has entered its second day.

The perpetrator, later identified as a U.S. Army reservist, is suspected of killing 18 people and wounding 13 others in a mass shooting in Maine. Previously, Lewiston City Council member Robert McCarthy confirmed that the death toll had risen to 22 people.

Police said Robert Card was armed and dangerous and asked people to shelter at home for safety.

On the evening of Thursday, October 26, 2023, police gathered at a home in Bowdoin, about a 20-minute drive from Lewiston – where the shooting occurred the night before, Wednesday, October 25.

Through a megaphone, FBI agents and local law enforcement can be heard telling the suspect to leave the house “with their hands in the air.” However, a few hours later, the police left the scene.

But it’s unclear what prompted the search, and a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety said officers were “simply doing their due diligence in following up on all leads in an effort to locate and d ‘stop Card’.

The shooting began at a bowling alley in the small town of Lewiston shortly before 7 p.m. local time (11 p.m. GMT), the police colonel said. A woman and six men died there.

Ten minutes later, gunfire was again reported at a nearby restaurant, Schemengees Bar & Grille, where eight more men were shot.

16 injured people were initially transferred to local hospitals, three of whom subsequently died.

Meanwhile, Lewiston and three neighboring cities remain under alert. Schools and most local businesses have closed and many will remain closed on Friday.

Aside from a few dog walkers, most people appeared to be staying home Thursday. The police were stationed in the streets.

The only intense activity was near the two shooting sites and the Central Maine Medical Center.
