iMessage is finally coming to Android, but…

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Request iMessage is finally accessible on Android phones, provided you have Nothing Phone (2). British consumer technology company Nothing recently announced a new app called Nothing Chats, which allows Android users to send texts with iMessage’s signature blue bubbles to iPhone users.

The app, initially available only to Nothing Phone (2) owners, will launch in beta on the Google Play Store on November 17, 2023. “This app is currently in beta and we have chosen to keep its availability more focused on provision to users. experiencing the best yet,” a spokesperson for Nothing said, as reported ExpressThursday (11/16/2023).

Initially, the app will be available in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, European Union, as well as other European countries such as Norway and Switzerland. The Nothing Phone (2) itself is a quality cell phone priced at 579 pounds (around Rp. 11.1 million), and Nothing Chats will be a free app for buyers of the device.

However, this app will also be compatible with other Android phones, including the previous model, the Nothing Phone (1), which still sells for 399 pounds (around Rp. 7.7 million). Nothing, which recently reached two million product sales, announced the Nothing Chats app via a video uploaded to YouTube on November 14, 2023.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei expressed his joy through a sticker with a blue bubble reading “Sorry, Team” (CEO Apple Tim Cook). “I assumed Tim Cook would watch this video and not be happy about it,” Pei joked.

Although Apple is known for making iMessage an exclusive feature for users of its devices, technically, hacking iMessage on Android is not illegal. Nothing collaborated with a New York startup, Sunbird, to develop this technology.

Users can log in to the Nothing Chats app with their Apple ID username and start sending and receiving Blue iMessages. There are, however, concerns about security. Apple prides itself on end-to-end iMessage encryption, while these Sunbird products require storing messages on their own servers that are not Apple’s.

Nothing Chats offers a variety of features, including support for texting, group chats, direct message settings, full quality photo and video sharing, voice notes, message receipts, reactions to messages and a “coming soon” feature.

For those who don’t have a Nothing Phone (2), an alternative is to join the waitlist for Sunbird’s similar app and technology, Beeper. Beeper routes all messages from multiple platforms like SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, LinkedIn and other major chat apps to a single inbox, including support for iMessage.
