Japanese Ambassador Kenji Kanasugi will be appointed ambassador to the PRC

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Japan’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Kenji Kanasugi, is reportedly on his way to the People’s Republic of China. Kanasugi’s diplomatic duties in China are expected to be more difficult amid relations between the two countries which are hampered by various issues.

One of the problems between Japan and China is that of the dumping of nuclear waste from Fukushima at sea.

Report-based Kyodo News, Sunday (10/22/2023), Kanasugi was previously the top official of the Japanese Foreign Ministry in the field of Asian affairs. Kanasugi’s appointment was quite unusual because he had never taken Chinese lessons.

This is the first time in the past seven years that Japan’s ambassador to China is not required to undergo language training. Ambassador Kanasugi’s goal to the PRC is to advance Japan-China relations. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls this school the “Chinese School.”

Regarding economic relations, China has banned all seafood from Japan due to nuclear waste disposal concerns, even though the international atomic agency says seafood from Japan is safe.

Added to this is the question of the arrest of Japanese pharmaceutical employees arrested by China on suspicion of being spies.
