Jokowi meets Canadian Prime Minister and discusses economic cooperation

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) spoke about the 70th anniversary of Indonesia-Canada relations during his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Jokowi pledged to continue to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

“This year we commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Canada. Indonesia and Canada should continue to foster the spirit of cooperation, the spirit of collaboration and the spirit of multilateralism in the face of global challenges. current events,” Jokowi said on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Elmau, Germany, as in a written statement from the Press, Media and Information Office of the Presidential Secretariat, Tuesday (6/28/2022).

Jokowi encourages the strengthening of economic cooperation by concluding the negotiations of the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) in 2024. This would send a positive signal to the Indonesian and Canadian business community.

On this occasion, Jokowi also expressed his gratitude for Canada’s full support for Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Indonesian Ambassador to Germany Arif Havas Oegroseno accompanied President Jokowi during the bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau.

In addition to meeting Trudeau, Jokowi held bilateral meetings with a number of leaders from other countries, namely Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Jokowi’s speech at the G7 summit

Jokowi has previously called on the G7 and G20 countries to jointly overcome the food crisis which now threatens people in developing countries to sink into hunger and extreme poverty. Jokowi expressed his views during the second session of the G7 summit, which raised the topic of food security and gender equality.

“(There are) 323 million people in 2022, according to the World Food Programme, who are at risk of acute food insecurity. The G7 and G20 have a great responsibility to overcome this food crisis. Let us take responsibility, now, and right now,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi said food was the most basic human rights issue. According to him, it is certain that women from poor families are those who suffer the most from food shortages for their children and their families.

“We must act quickly to find concrete solutions. Food production must be increased. Global food and fertilizer supply chains must return to normal,” Jokowi said.

In his speech, Jokowi underlined the importance of the support of the G7 countries for the reintegration of Ukrainian wheat exports and Russian food and fertilizer exports into global supply chains.
