President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau on Saturday (5/20) at the Rihga Royal Hotel, Hiroshima, Japan. Jokowi asked for Trudeau’s support regarding the economic cooperation agreement between the two countries.
“Request Your Excellency’s support for the conclusion of the CEPA agreement between Indonesia and Canada, the realization of the investments of the Canadian Pension Fund focused on the development of the capital of the archipelago, the development of a funding mechanism for feasibility studies of new projects in Indonesia,” Jokowi said in a written statement, Saturday (20/5/2023).
In addition, Jokowi also hopes that there will be an acceleration in the realization of the development of a green airport in North Kalimantan, the exploration and beneficiation of rare earth metals and the establishment of a bilateral working group. Jokowi also appreciated the support of G7 countries, including Canada, in helping Indonesia’s energy transition.
“I hope $20 billion in financial support can be realized soon, but not in the form of debt,” Jokowi said.
Regarding food security, Jokowi pushes for the establishment of an agreement between the Indonesian BUMN and the Canadian Commercial Corporation concerning the supply of potash and wheat.
During the meeting, Jokowi and Trudeau also discussed ASEAN, including the situation in Myanmar. Jokowi said the ASEAN-Canada summit would be held in September 2023 in Indonesia.
“See you in Jakarta, PM Trudeau,” the president said.
Accompanying the President during this meeting, Coordinating Minister of Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of BUMN Erick Thohir, Secretary of cabinet Pramono Anung and the director of East Asia of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Santo Darmosumarto.
