However, United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the G7 countries wanted to reduce risk, not separate from China.

In the latest draft communiqué, the G7 countries agreed to establish China’s status as the world’s second largest economy. With this status, the country’s leaders believe it is necessary to strengthen cooperation to break out of dependence on China.

On the other hand, China has expressed concern that the summit could turn into a political confrontation against Beijing. The statement was released by the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo ahead of the G7 summit.

Meanwhile, the G7 summit in Hiroshima will also see the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He is due to arrive in Hiroshima on Saturday (20/5) to rally support for the defense of his country’s sovereignty.

Zelenskyy’s arrival in Japan comes amid threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has signaled he will use nuclear weapons within a year of the Russia-Ukraine war. It also makes Western countries restless.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine 15 months ago also raised concerns for Japan, the only Asian country in the G7. Japan believes that China could also take more aggressive action against Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.
