Jokowi says he will be “Cawe-cawe” in 2024 election, turns out that means

According to the explanation of the professor of linguistics UGM Prof. I Dewa Putu Wijana, the word cawe-cawe comes from Javanese. However, this word has been absorbed into Indonesian.

“Cawe-cawe is a Javanese word meaning ‘to participate in running something’,” Putu Wijayana said when contacted. detikJatengWednesday (5/31/2023).

Moreover, he explained that the usage of the word is actually quite neutral, so it is commonly used in all activities.

“Meaning is actually neutral. It can be used for any sense in dealing with a problem. In any field or activity,” he said.

Putu Wijayana then gave an example of using the word cawe-cawe in everyday life.

“It’s a normal word. For example, I am a young woman who smells like a mother in the kitchen (I want to help my mother in the kitchen). I am a girl who is just starting to hoe (I participate in the hoeing) ,” he explained.

“This word (cawe-cawe) is usually used in casual or informal speech,” he added.

The meaning of the word Cawe-cawe pronounced by Jokowi

Even though it is neutral, Putu Wijayana said the meaning of this word might change in the context of its use by President Jokowi, who speaks Javanese. Moreover, if this word is used in the world of politics.

“Now, as Head of State, Jokowi uses the term in the sense of participating in the handling of political matters. Now, in its current usage, a word that was originally neutral allows for negative undertones. Especially when ‘it is expressed by the political opponents of Jokowi,” he concluded.

For information, Jokowi said during a meeting with editors of a number of media outlets at the State Palace on Monday (5/29). On this occasion, he stressed that the cawe-cawe in question did not lead to a negative context.

“For the good of the nation and the country, I will discuss, of course in a positive way,” Jokowi said.

“I will not break the rules, I will not break the law and I will not pollute democracy,” he added.

On this occasion, Jokowi also expressed his hope that in the future, the President will oversee and pursue strategic policies such as IKN development and endorsement. He also hopes that the participants in the elections will compete fairly and asks the TNI-Polri and the ASN to be neutral.
