More than 100 million people affected by Canadian wildfires in North America

At least 100 million people in Canada and the United States face serious health risks due to wildfires in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Canada is experiencing the “worst fire season” in its history.

Here are the top 5 updates:

  1. More than 3.8 million acres – about twice the size of New Jersey – have so far been burned, according to Canada’s National Fire Database.
  2. More than 20,000 people have been displaced in Canada because of the wildfires. Quebec, which is facing 150 active wildfires, is responsible for the pollution in New York. On Wednesday afternoon, New York had the worst air pollution of any city in the world.
  3. A dense pollution haze casts an eerie yellowish glow over Manhattan’s famous skyscrapers, delaying flights and forcing the postponement of sporting events.
  4. Major League Baseball postponed Wednesday’s game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox and the Phillies’ home game against the Detroit Tigers due to poor air quality. The Women’s NBA and National Women’s Soccer League also announced delays. In music, organizers canceled the opening night of a concert series in Brooklyn that would have featured Corinne Bailey Rae.
  5. On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden spoke with Trudeau and offered “additional support to respond to the devastating and historic wildfires.” Trudeau on Twitter said he thanked Biden, adding, “These fires are affecting our daily routines, our lives and livelihoods, and our air quality.
