Wildfires that have ravaged Canada for weeks have left Montreal, the capital, temporarily with one of the worst air quality in the world. According to the Swiss technology company “IQAir”, which monitors air quality around the world, this city in eastern Quebec had the highest air pollution in the world on Sunday – ahead of Johannesburg (South Africa) and Jakarta. (Indonesia). Broadcaster CBC Canada wrote that the environmental agency ECCC had linked smoke in Montreal and the capital, Ottawa, to numerous wildfires.
Quebec Premier François Legault wrote on Twitter that people at risk should stay home. Several sporting events and concerts were also canceled due to the haze. According to the Quebec provincial government, there are approximately 80 fires burning in the province. “The bushfire situation in northern Quebec remains worrisome. We are monitoring the situation closely,” wrote Legault.
