The Canadian national team centre-back’s social media account was immediately flooded with negative comments, including racist slurs.

In the comments column of his latest upload on the social media platform, Instagram, Upamecano received various insults and insults regarding his performance in the match. In fact, it’s not uncommon for these comments to contain remarks that offend Upamecano’s race and skin color.

In one of the comments, Upamecano asked to return to Africa. Even with comments containing images of gorillas and monkeys with emojis that show disgust. These emojis and comments are often seen as symbols of racial abuse.

Bayern Munich also acted quickly by participating in the comments on the upload. Comments on Die Bayern’s official account contain support for the 24-year-old centre-back, while condemning all negative comments towards Upamecano.

“Everyone at FC Bayern condemns in the strongest terms against all forms of racial abuse! Everyone at the club stands behind you, Upa,” wrote the comment on Bayern Munich’s official account such as reported by The Associated Press, Wednesday (4/12/2023).

Upamecano erred in the second half after playing convincingly in the first half of the game at the Etihad Stadium. City’s second goal, scored by Bernardo Silva, came because the French-born player failed to control the ball. The ball was picked up by Jack Grealish who then sent the ball to Erling Haaland. Then Haaland threw a gastric cross into the penalty area. Haaland’s bait ball was seized by Silva with a header and put City ahead in the 70th minute.

The former RB Leipzig centre-back also made a passing error when he joined the attack from the back. After a poor performance in this match, Upamecano also received a low rating from a number of European sports media.

French sports media the team, giving a value of 2 out of 10 to Upamecano’s appearance in this game. Likewise with the worst rating given by the German media, Picture, against players who have started strengthening Munich since 2021.
