Ontario Muslims raise over IDR 2.3 billion for Morocco earthquake and Libya floods

Hidayatullah.com—The Muslim community in Ontario, Canada, managed to collect donations of over $150,000 (equivalent to IDR 2,307,000,000) as a show of solidarity for the victims of the earthquake in Morocco and major floods in Libya, reports Morocco World News.

The funds were raised from 300 people who attended a fundraising event organized by Islamic Relief Canada last Friday.

Funds raised will be used to provide life-saving aid, food, emergency shelter and essential items such as mattresses and blankets to victims affected by the two natural disasters.

One of the main organizers of the event, Yasmin Alameddine, said: “If you put yourself in their shoes, lose your home, lose your family, lose everything you have ever loved and everything you know.

“(And then start) figuring out where to have their next meal, where to sleep, so that uncertainty, we hope to at least give them that,” Yasmin said at the charity event.

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale in Morocco on September 8 destroyed tens of thousands of homes, killing up to 3,000 people. Meanwhile, in Libya, at least 11,300 victims are confirmed dead, while another 10,100 are missing.*
