Tennis News: Spanish tennis player, Paula Badosa has managed to advance to the third round of the Charleston Open for the third time in her career.
The 12th seed struggled for 1 hour 51 minutes to defeat Canadian tennis player, Leylah Annie Fernandez with a tight 7-5, 7-6 result in the second round of the 2023 Charleston Open season.
The 2021 champion at Indian Wells came from behind 3-0 in the first set and saved a set point in the second-set tiebreak before picking up a win that took her to a head-to-head against Annie Fernandez at 3 -0. He also won their fixtures in the qualifying rounds for Auckland’s 2020 season and Indian Wells’ 2022 season.
“We are still fighting hard. He played so fast that he didn’t give me time. He played amazing, especially early in the game. In the last games of the second set, he started aiming for the line again,” Badosa said.
“At first, I didn’t think he would start so well. I said to myself, OK, you have to serve very well and take risks before him. I started playing a little more aggressively and it worked out well.
Annie Fernandez started the game snatching 12 of the first 15 points. But he was unable to sustain such a risky strategy. The forehand that had initially created a number of winners began to falter towards the end of the first set and the start of the second after leading 2-4.
The 2021 US Open runner-up had shone again when she smashed Badosa and forced a second tiebreaker. In the decisive round, the two tennis players fought hard, including when the Spaniard had to secure a set point opportunity. He finally got a match point opportunity after the return of the Canadian went too far. Not wasting a golden chance, the 12th seed also converted the match point chance.
In the third round of the Charleston Open, Badosa will face 19-year-old tennis player Diana Shnaider who crushed fifth seed Veronika Kudermetova with a convincing 6-4 6-2 result after 1 hour 34 minutes.
Shnaider came from behind with break opportunities in both sets before beating Kudermetova to win her first career title at the 2021 Charleston Open.
