Guterres’ statement was a response to a report by scientists that July 2023 would be the hottest month in history. This is based on the latest data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the European Commission’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
Guterres called on the world to rid itself of the fossil fuel sector as the largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions. Apart from this, he also urged businesses, cities and financial institutions to attend the Climate Ambition Conference with credible plans for change.
“No more greenwashing. No more fraud. “And no more blatant distortion of antitrust laws to sabotage the zero-emissions alliance,” Guterres said.
Dodo Gunawan, a climate observer at the Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), said Guterres’ statement was an assertion about global warming, which is already at a worrying stage. Because, based on the Paris climate agreement approved in 2015, it aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, but it is better to keep it at 1.5 degrees Celsius until the end of this century to fight climate change.
“This is a very worrying situation linked to global warming, the current conditions are visible. I see that until May, everything happened at the highest level,” Dodo told Liputan6.com.
