Question of election candidates in China under investigation by Canada

Canada sniff out alleged interference China against the elections in the land of broken ice. Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau will appoint a special investigator to investigate.

City of ReutersOn Tuesday (7/3/2023), Canadian local media recently published detailed reports, citing a number of intelligence sources, on the alleged scheme orchestrated by China to interfere in the 2021 and 2019 Canadian elections.

Trudeau announced that Ottawa would also investigate other alleged foreign interference in the country’s elections. The survey will be conducted separately.



“I will appoint an independent special rapporteur, who will have a broad mandate and provide expert recommendations to fight interference and strengthen our democracy,” Trudeau told reporters at a news conference.

Trudeau’s move came after he publicly pushed for a response to media reports of alleged Chinese election interference. Trudeau said the independent special rapporteur was a “high-profile Canadian figure” and would have the power to make recommendations on foreign interference, including public inquiries.

Trudeau also asked lawmakers on the National Security Committee to open an investigation into alleged foreign interference in Canada’s elections.

The findings of the investigation will be reported to Parliament

The Canadian Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Intelligence (CNSOP), which is the intelligence oversight committee, will lead the investigation and report its findings to Parliament. In this investigation, Trudeau also asked other oversight agencies to intervene.

One of them is the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency (NSIRA). The OSSNR was engaged to examine how national security agencies in Canada deal with threats of foreign interference.

“Together, these steps will provide insight into what happened in the last two elections, how foreign governments seek to interfere, how security agencies in Canada respond to threats of interference, and how information flows. in government,” Trudeau said.
