Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Former Counselor submarine OceanGate said the submarine visited the wreckage TitanicTitan dropped his ballast and attempted to climb for a few moments before exploding and disappearing.
Chances are the five people on board also aborted the dive when it exploded.
Rob McCallum, an expedition consultant who previously advised OceanGate on marketing and logistics, told The New Yorker he had received early reports of Titan’s latest dive.
“Based on reports I received immediately after the incident, the submarine was approaching 3,500 meters deep in the ocean,” he said.
McCallum said the submarine lost weight, meaning the dive was aborted and then lost communication with the carrier.
According to Insider, McCallum is one of the founders of shipping company EYOS Expeditions. Previously, he led dives on the wreck of the Titanic and other deep water sites.
She uses a submarine designed to reach depths of 5,700 meters and has been approved for extreme depth diving by DNV, unlike OceanGate’s Titan.
He was in regular contact with OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush at one point and visited the OceanGate repair shop, according to the New Yorker.
McCallum is at least the second open person to suggest that Titan may have tried to rise before it exploded.
OceanGate previously halted Titan’s dive when the submarine lost one of its propulsion systems and several buoys detached from the ship.
The company canceled more dives on Titan than it conducted, according to The New York Times.
Former passengers said the Titan had frequent problems with its battery and ballast system.
