Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Facebook will block news content if the Indonesian government implements publisher rights rules.

Publishers’ rights rules require digital platforms like Google and Facebook to pay for content published by news companies. President Jokowi has said that this regulation is a priority for the Indonesian government.

Meta Public Policy Director for Southeast Asia, Rafael Frankel, said Meta will address the same policies in Indonesia and Canada.

The current meta has limited the circulation of news content posted on Facebook. The move comes after Canada implemented a similar rule regarding publishers’ rights, which requires digital companies to pay for news content that appears on their platforms.

“It can be detrimental because it limits Facebook users’ access to news. We’re reluctant to adopt the same policy as Canada. We really don’t want to get to that phase,” Rafael said.

Rafael said the publishers’ rights policy is difficult to achieve its goals. Additionally, specifically for Facebook, he revealed that news content only represents about 3% of the company’s total revenue.

He pointed out that Facebook had constantly engaged with the government when developing these regulations.

“We regularly give our input to the government regarding this regulation that this regulation is neither sustainable nor successful,” Rafael said some time ago.

Rafael said Meta asked the Secretary of State to reconsider the existing regulatory plan to find a solution that benefits all parties.
