Speaker of Canada’s House of Representatives apologizes for praising former soldier Adolf Hitler

Liputan6.com, Ottawa – Canadian Speaker of the House of Commons (DPR) Anthony Rota has apologized after praising a Ukrainian veteran who allegedly fought for a Nazi military unit during World War II.

In his speech on Friday (22/9/2023), during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the Canadian Parliament, Rota praised Yaroslav Hunka (98) as a Ukrainian and Canadian veteran who fought for the independence of Ukraine against Russian aggressors at the time and continues to show support to this day.

“He’s a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service,” Rota said, as quoted in CTV News, Tuesday (9/26).

Rota’s praise of Hunka was then met with fists and fists. standing ovation (standing ovation).

Several Jewish and human rights organizations condemned the confession, saying Hunka served in a Nazi military unit known as the 14th Grenadier Division of the Waffen SS.

“I later learned more information that made me regret my decision to admit this individual,” Rota was quoted as saying. CNN.

“I would like to apologize to everyone. I am truly sorry for offending many people with my attitude and words.”

In an earlier statement, Rota also said he offers his deepest apologies to the Jewish community in Canada and around the world.

According to CTV News, Hunka was invited by Rota. It is not known how the two knew each other.
