“Super Pig” makes the United States and Canada dizzy

The governments of Canada and the United States are troubled by the invasion of “super” pigs that threaten the biodiversity of both countries. The governments of both countries continue to seek effective ways to eradicate this pest.

The super pig is a cross between a cattle pig and a boar or wild boar imported from Europe in the 1980s,” Ryan Brook, an environmental expert at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada, told Business Media. Insider, Tuesday (4/4/2023).

Brook explained that at that time, Canadians liked to eat wild boar meat, so wild boars began to be bred. They were then crossed with bovine pigs and produced larger-bodied, thicker-furred pigs that could withstand North American winters.

In 2001, wild boar meat fever began to wane, causing many farms to go bankrupt. The super pigs are finally unleashed. Some also escaped from the farm. Brook noted that there was once a farm that released 300 super pigs.

“They are the worst invasive mammals on Earth. Bulldozers live by destroying ecosystems,” said Brook, who has spent a decade researching these animals.

The weight of the super pig, which reaches 300 kilograms, means that the animal needs more food than wild pigs or wild boars. They are all eaters. Unlike grass-eating herbivores, Super Pigs rake the ground with their powerful snouts.

Uprooted plants and grasses. At the same time, larvae, mushrooms, duck nests and their eggs, as well as biota under the soil surface are also uprooted and become food for pigs.

Additionally, super pigs, as omnivorous animals, also feed on frogs, toads, salamanders, and various insects endemic to Canada. In fact, there is a pig that, when hunted and disemboweled, turns out to have hunted white-tailed deer and birds.

Pig manure contaminates soil and water because it contains Escherichia coli bacteria and germs that cause hepatitis.

Now these pigs are moving from southern Canada to the United States (US). The US government itself has been overwhelmed by super pig parasites. In fact, each year, according to the US Department of Agriculture, the value of damage from super hogs reaches US$2.5 billion.

The problem is that hunting is not an effective solution. Brook said the super nasty females give birth twice a year. Each time she gives birth, she can produce two to six piglets.

“The hunting season is strictly regulated by the government, and the pigs cannot keep up with the breeding speed. In fact, these pigs are becoming masters of hiding and going further and further inland, which puts in danger to virgin forests,” he said.

Brook suggested that whenever residents see this super pig, report it immediately to the local environmental department. Officers were able to immediately catch and kill the pig.
