The story of Kiska, the loneliest orca in the world who died in captivity


KOMPAS.com — A killer whale named Kiska died at MarineLand, an amusement park in Ontario, Canada, on Thursday (03/09/2023).

Kiska was believed to be 47 when he died.

The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals describes Kiska as the loneliest orca in the world.

According to the organization, Kiska’s life has been filled with tragedy after tragedy. Her five children died before the age of 7.

“It’s heartbreaking to know that Kiska will never have the opportunity to be transferred to a whale sanctuary,” said Camille Labchuk, director of Animal Justice Canada.

“Kiska should have the freedom he really deserves,” he continued.

Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General spokesman Brent Ross said the government was notified of Kiska’s death on Thursday.

However, groups such as Animal Justice say more transparency is needed.

“We demand justice for what Kiska went through at the hands of MarineLand,” Labchuk said.

“We call on provincial authorities to release the autopsy results and prosecute MarineLand for Kiska’s plight,” he continued.

While Kiska’s cause of death has yet to be determined, Animal Justice filed a lawsuit against MarineLand in 2021.

Around this time, Animal Justice highlighted Kiska’s physical and mental health, after footage surfaced of the orca languidly floating around in her tank.

Although MarineLand denies any negligence in the matter, a video of Kiska banging her head against the tank wall went viral in December 2021.

The amusement park has been accused of unlawful use of animals.

Niagara police found MarineLand in violation of Canada’s Whale and Dolphin Farming Act.
