History of Crocos

Crocs is the brainchild of Scott Seamans, Lyndon “Duke” Hanson and George Boedecker, Jr. of Colorado who founded Crocs in 2001 after inventing foam clogs from Canadian brand Foam Creations, which Crocs later acquired.

The first model produced by Crocs, the Beach, was introduced at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Florida in 2002.

Inspired by Dutch clogs, Crocs were originally designed to be boat shoes.

This simple fact can bring clarity to the Crocs polarized design and material composition. The shoe was originally designed for sailors, favoring a grip-oriented sole, waterproof material and gaiters. Removing the clog design, the Crocs are also designed to be easy to put on and take off, which is great for the high seas or just running errands.

Designed to perform on land and sea, the Crocs are made of a patented foam called Croslite. The foam, which is exclusive to Crocs, is actually closed-cell resin, not plastic or rubber as one might assume. The brand further innovated Croslite in 2018, creating LiteRide, a material that is “25% lighter and 40% softer than Croslite, while still providing shock absorption and support,” according to Fast Company.

Since the shoe was designed to perform on land and sea, the brand got its name from the multi-environment amphibious crocodile and hence the name Crocs.

Acquisition

There are some fun facts about holes in Crocs shoes and sandals. A pair of Crocs for children or Crocs for men in size 15, each pair has 13 holes in the upper part of the shoe. But they don’t just exist for aesthetics. The holes act as ventilation and expel excess moisture to keep shoes fresh.

Crocs acquired the family business Jibbitz to turn the hole into a lucrative charm holder.
Sheri Schmelzer and her husband Rich started Jibbitz in 2005 after Sheri was inspired to decorate her children’s Crocs with faux flowers and charms.

The company quickly grew as a way to customize the popular comfort shoe. Crocs took notice and acquired the company in 2006 for $10 million, with an additional $10 million promised if the sister company met its revenue targets. Today, some 15 years later, Jibbitz is still an important part of the Crocs empire.

Crocs has sold over 720 million pairs of shoes since its inception, in over 90 countries around the world.
