On Thursday (20/4/2023) evening, Peel Regional Police said gold and other items were stolen on Monday after containers were unloaded from the plane.
“A plane arrived here at the airport in the afternoon. In accordance with normal procedures, the aircraft was disassembled and the cargo was transported from the aircraft to a cargo storage facility,” Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn said when announcing the flight.
“What I can say is that the containers (have) high value shipments. It contains gold, but it is not exclusive to gold and contains other elements of monetary value” , continued Duivesteyn, quoted by The Guardian.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators are also investigating the theft, which is one of the largest in Canadian history. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority, citing an “active police investigation,” declined to comment on the flight.
Gold mines in northern Ontario frequently ship gold bullion through the city’s airport, which handles nearly half of the country’s air cargo.
Duivesteyn said he wouldn’t call it “professional” work. “The investigation is ongoing and the incident is isolated,” he continued.
Police did not identify the intended destination of the stolen cargo, nor confirm that the gold was still in the country. “It’s very rare,” Duivesteyn said.
