Toto Wolff reveals why George Russell didn’t continue racing at the Canadian GP

F1 News: Mercedes AMG boss Toto Wolff has explained the reason he didn’t allow George Russell to finish the race at the Canadian F1 Grand Prix yesterday. He estimated that Russell’s W14 car suffered extensive damage.

During the race which took place on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, George Russell crashed into the track barrier on the 16th lap. Russell then complained about damage to his car and attempted to enter the pits. Trying to fix it, Mercedes then decided not to let Russell finish the race. As for the mature considerations that were thought by Wolff, why he should let Russell end the race prematurely.

“The oxidation matrix was high on both cars. But after it hit the wall, interestingly the oxidation matrix increased significantly on the left and at this point we felt we We weren’t going to finish the race, so we stopped him (George Russell),” Toto Wolff said in an interview with local media.

According to him, the retirement option is the best for the common good. Russell himself was of course disappointed as he couldn’t earn many points at the Canadian GP. But what happened can certainly no longer be changed. Now he needs to improve his performance so he can shine and progress in the upcoming series. He needs to start catching up with Lewis Hamilton, who has again successfully entered the podium. If Hamilton is competitive, Russell should have no problem with the W14.
