Trudeau criticizes Meta for refusing to pay for local media news content

Trudeau criticized the couple’s efforts to circumvent a bill that would force digital giants to pay for local journalism content.

According to him, independent journalism with very important news content deserves to be paid fairly from a digital platform as large as Meta.

“Meta continues to say they don’t want to pay journalists for the work they do, showing how irresponsible and out of touch they are,” Trudeau said. AFP.

Canadian police managed to uncover that Meta planned to block news from online media for Facebook and Instagram users in defiance of the bill.

Meanwhile, Google would test media access restrictions on Canadian citizens.

The new law will require digital giants to enter into commercial agreements with Canadian outlets for news and information shared on their platforms.

The policy was inspired by Australia’s world’s first new media trading code, which aims to make Google and Meta pay for news content on their platforms.

The giant corporation that dominates online advertising has been accused of draining money from local news outlets by using their content for free.
