Trust is the foundation of ASEAN-PRC cooperation

Jakarta, September 6, 2023 – Concrete and mutually beneficial cooperation between Southeast Asian countries can be achieved if there is mutual trust. This trust must be built and maintained by all parties. One form of mutual trust is respecting international law.

This was highlighted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during the opening of the 26th ASEAN-China Summit (KTT) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Jakarta, Wednesday (6/9/2023).

At the summit, which was also attended by Prime Minister Li Qiang, President Jokowi emphasized that China is a strategic dialogue partner within ASEAN. in 2024, relations between ASEAN countries and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) will enter their 20th year and have been outlined in the Friendship and Cooperation Agreement.

“We need to translate all this into concrete and mutually beneficial cooperation. This can only be done if we trust each other, which of course must be built and maintained by all parties,” President Jokowi said.

President Jokowi further emphasized that mutual trust would be a positive force for ASEAN and China in maintaining and creating regional stability and peace.

President Jokowi chaired the entire series of meetings on the second day of the 43rd ASEAN Summit (KTT), which was held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

President Jokowi chaired the 26th ASEAN-China Summit which was attended by leaders of ASEAN countries as well as Li Qiang. Next, President Jokowi will also chair the 24th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit, which will also be attended by President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk Yeol, as well as the 26th ASEAN-Japan Summit alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In the afternoon, President Joko Widodo and leaders of ASEAN countries participated in the 26th ASEAN Plus Three (APT) Summit. The meeting, held in Room 3 of Cenderawasih, was also attended by the leaders of the PRC, the Republic of Korea and Japan.

President Jokowi was then scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the Kakatua Hall of the JCC. Next, a bilateral meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris took place. Furthermore, President Jokowi and state leaders will attend the 11th ASEAN-US Summit which will also be held at Cendrawasih Hall 3 of the JCC.

Additionally, the ASEAN-Canada Summit will be held in the presence of leaders of ASEAN countries with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In the evening, President Jokowi and Mrs. Iriana Joko Widodo, together with heads of state and their companions, will attend a dinner for the 43rd ASEAN Summit.
