U-17 World Cup: Beat Canada 5-1, Mali qualifies for the round of 16

WEATHERINDONESIA, SURABAYA – Mali qualified for the round of 16 of the U-17 World Cup after winning comfortably 5-1 in the last match of Group B of the 2023 U-17 World Cup, Thursday (16/ 11/2023) at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium, Surabaya.

Soumaïla Coulibaly’s team qualified in second position with six points from three matches. They are only behind Spain, who have seven points after drawing 1-1 against Uzbekistan in the match at Manahan Stadium, Solo. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan is in third place with four points, while Canada is at the bottom of the standings with 0 points as they have lost three matches.

Mali, who had already lost against Spain, did better than Kanda. Mali was able to take control of the match and scored two goals in the first 30 minutes. The first goals scored were scored by Ibrahim Diarra in the 14th minute and Mahammoud Barry in the 26th minute.

Canada, who was the weakest team in Group B, reduced the lead in the last minute of the first half through Richard Chukwu. Richard Chukwu’s contribution gives Andrew Olivieri’s men hope of securing their first point in the competition.

However, Canada was unable to equalize. Instead, it was Mali who asserted their dominance thanks to Ibrahim Kanate (’73), Hamidou Makalou (’77) and Ousmane Thiero (90+1).
