Unstoppable European representatives at US Open 2023

Badminton News: Things are getting serious at the YONEX US Open 2023 in Council Bluffs, USA. After two days of action, we approach the Round of 16 today with many European players still in contention for the title.

Jan Louda (Czech Republic) has been doing well lately and maintaining his convincing form at the US Open. After giving runner-up Christo Popov a great battle in the round of 16 at the European Games (19-21, 21-23) and a big victory against Weng Hong Yang (China) in the first round of the Canadian Open, Louda also had a great first set at Council Bluffs beating Arnaud Merkle (France) 21-8, 21-18.

In today’s round of 16, Louda will face Canada Open champion Lakshya Sen of India.

With Mads Christophersen and Magnus Johannesen (both Danish), we will see two more European men’s singles today.

In women’s singles, Line Christophersen of Denmark will be looking to go all the way to the eighth seed in the tournament. She will face Vivien Sandorhazi of Hungary in today’s pan-European encounter. Julie Dawall Jakobsen (Denmark) and Ksenia Polikarpova (Israel) will also fight for a place in the quarter-finals.

Søgaard and Kjær couldn’t repeat last round last week

Last week’s Canada Open finalists Frederik Søgaard and Rasmus Kjaer of Denmark lost to Yang/Chiu of Chinese Taipei in three games yesterday 19-21, 21-16, 20-22. After beating the same pair last week, the Danes nearly repeated the result but couldn’t convert their match points at 20-19 in the deciding game.

Scottish twins Matthew and Christopher Grimley and Easton/Russ (England), Geiss/Voelker (Germany) and Corvee/Labar (France) will represent Europe in the last 16 of the men’s doubles today.

With Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen (Denmark) as first seeds and Margot Lambert/Anne Tran (France) as third seeds in women’s doubles, and Mathias Thyrri/Amalie Magelund (Denmark) as third seeds in mixed doubles, there are the most promising European pairs in the tournament.

Jan Voelker/Stine Kuespert (Germany) will face a tough challenge today at the US Open 2023 as they take on mixed doubles duo Ye Hong Wei/Lee Chia Hsin of Chinese Taipei. In their only previous encounter at the 2022 Portugal International, Germany came up short in three matches and will be looking for revenge today.
