US Dollar Strengthens, Boosted by US Unemployment Data

New York: The US dollar exchange rate strengthened at the end of the session on Thursday (Friday morning WIB). Weekly jobless claims in the United States fell to their lowest level in eight months.

A report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by a seasonally adjusted 20,000 to 201,000 for the week ended Sept. 16, the lowest level since January. The report also shows that the number of unemployed in early September was the lowest since January.

“The economy is showing no signs of slowing suggesting that inflation will not return to its target,” said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS.

The general current activity diffusion index from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s manufacturing survey fell sharply to -13.5 in September from 12 in August, but these numbers do not appear to have a notable impact on the American dollar.

UK and Switzerland keep interest rates unchanged

Meanwhile, the Bank of England (BoE) and the Swiss National Bank kept interest rates unchanged on Thursday. Most economists expect both banks to raise interest rates by another 25 basis points as inflation remains at high levels in Britain and Switzerland.

At the end of trading in New York, the euro fell to $1.0662 from $1.0686 in the previous session, and the pound sterling fell to $1.2291 from $1.2362.

The US dollar bought 147.5180 Japanese yen, lower than 147.9800 Japanese yen in the previous session. The US dollar rose from 0.8969 Swiss francs to 0.9040 Swiss francs, and to 1.3469 Canadian dollars from 1.3437 Canadian dollars. The US dollar rose from 11.0915 Swedish crowns to 11.1616 Swedish crowns.
