Washington: Amid diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, the United States said it was “publicly and privately” urging New Delhi to cooperate with Ottawa in the investigation into the alleged killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The United States also said the investigation must continue and called for those responsible for Nijjar’s murder to be brought to justice.
Addressing the issue during his daily press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stressed the importance of a thorough investigation into Canada’s allegations that India was involved in the killing from Nijjar.
“We are deeply concerned by the allegations raised by Prime Minister (Canadian Justin) Trudeau. We remain in close contact with our Canadian partners,” Miller said.
“We believe it is essential that Canada’s investigation continues and that the perpetrators are brought to justice. And we have publicly – and privately – urged the Indian government to cooperate with the Canadian investigation,” he continued, quoting the website. India todayTuesday September 26, 2023.
Consistent with Millter, Jim Costa, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing California, also expressed concerns about reports of Nijjar’s murder.
