Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Halloween 2023 is approaching. Many people in South Korea, especially foreigners, still clearly remember the terrible tragedy that occurred in Itaewon a year ago.
“Honestly, I’m still trying to get over all of this,” said one anonymous survivor. Korean weatherquoted Monday (10/16/2023).
He said that although it seemed unrealistic to hope that there would be no Halloween celebrations in Itaewon this year, he hoped that the government, police and businesses would do something to honor the victims and everyone involved. “A lot of people chose not to go to Itaewon this year, but for those who did, I expected the atmosphere to be very different, and it was,” the survivor said.
His opinion might be true, many people are considered more cautious as Halloween approaches. People are debating whether they should put up Halloween decorations at home, go to a Halloween party, or attend Halloween-themed events at their workplace.
An English teacher at a primary school in South Korea, Stan revealed that his fellow teachers asked him if it was appropriate to organize Halloween-themed activities for his students this year. His colleagues, he says, consider that Halloween remains a sensitive issue for a certain number of people.
“We usually plan special classes, like Halloween and Christmas, to make sure we have something fun for students to do,” he said.
To reach a consensus, he held a meeting survey on the Facebook group account “Every Expat in Korea” on September 14, 2023. As a result, 57% of the 502 respondents who participated chose to “celebrate Halloween this year”, while the rest did not.
“I was quite surprised at the number of people who followed survey ” said Stan. As a South African, he admits that he only celebrates Halloween in class.
“Survey this clearly shows that many people still have raw emotions regarding the Itaewon Halloween tragedy and who is to blame. There was a feeling of “is it insensitive to celebrate Halloween when so many people died last year?”
