World Leaders Wear Batik at G20 Summit, Jokowi: Souvenirs from Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi expressed satisfaction with the presence of world leaders wearing batik at the event Welcome dinner at the Summit or G20 Summit in the GWK Bali area on November 15 and 16, 2022.

Several heads of state wore batik, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The leaders of the G20 countries are carrying batik at the G20 Summit Gala Dinner in Bali. Batiks of various patterns and colors are Indonesian souvenirs for our important guests,” Jokowi said via his personal social media page on Saturday, November 19, 2022.

Jokowi explained that Indonesian batik is a humanitarian heritage for oral and intangible culture recognized by UNESCO. Moreover, Jokowi explained that batik has various patterns and colors that people use in various situations, from official events, fashion scenes to daily life.

Additionally, Jokowi said the batik uses natural dyes that can be found in various places in Indonesia.

“The red was dyed with noni fruit in Lasem, the blue was dyed with indigo plants in Pekalongan, and the brown color was made from the soga plant in Solo/Yogyakarta. The batik is the contribution of Indonesia to global culture,” Jokowi said.

Jokowi uploaded the issue of batik from G20 summit guests amid a conversation about a British YouTuber, Mahyar Tousi, who was seen as having insulted batik. Mahyer conveyed this insult via a tweet on November 16, 2022.

The tweet immediately went viral and aroused the emotion of Indonesian netizens. The name Mahyar became trending topics on Twitter. Receiving much criticism, Mahyar clarified and admitted that he did not mean to insult batik, which is one of the cultural prides of Indonesia.
