Zulhas says ICA-CEPA negotiations could end next year

Minister of Commerce (Mendag) Zulkifli Hasan aims for the completion of negotiations on the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) which is expected to be completed in 2024. He made this known during a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Commerce, Small Business and Exports. Promotion and International Trade of Canada Mary Ng on the sidelines of the APEC Summit which took place in San Francisco, United States.

The Minister of Commerce, who is also the General Chairman of PAN, said that not only with Indonesia, economic cooperation between Canada and ASEAN countries is also expected to be completed next year.

Zulhas stressed that relations between Indonesia and Canada are currently doing well. Indonesia is ready to assist Canada at any time with any problems or complaints.

“Relations between Indonesia and Canada regarding ICA-CEPA are very good. We will help Canada at any time if there is a complaint,” Zulhas said in his statement on Thursday (16/11/2023).

Zulhas hopes that Canada will be able to meet the food needs of the Indonesian people. Zulhas said some of Indonesia’s food needs include fruits, meat, soybeans, wheat and flour. Indonesia still needs around 1 million kg of meat and 13 million kg of flour.

According to Zulhas, this ICA-CEPA collaboration also allows Canada to export its food products to Indonesia. Zulhas ensures that each product is certified halal, so that it can be consumed by the Indonesian Muslim community.

Zulhas hopes that through ICA-CEPA, representatives from Canada will visit Indonesia more often to directly discuss the sustainability and progress of cooperation. He also said Indonesia would help Canada achieve its goals in cooperation with ASEAN countries.
