Bagja explains Bawaslu’s challenges in the elections to representatives of embassies of several countries

Jakarta, General Election Supervision Agency – Bawaslu Chairman Rahmat Bagja said that the 2024 elections will be a challenge for election organizers compared to previous elections. Because he predicts that there will be many potential violations that could occur both domestically and abroad.

Bagja said several crucial issues facing Bawaslu include monetary policy, neutrality of ASN, TNI/Polri, identity politics related to SARA, hoaxes and fake news and accuracy of the electoral list permanent (DPT). According to him, not only in Indonesia, this can be applied outside Indonesia.

“Bawaslu continues to carry out awareness raising and participatory supervision activities involving the community, so we also use social media intensively to become an information channel,” Bagja explained at the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday ( 18/1/2024). ).

In the forum, Bagja also explained that hoaxes and disinformation are easy targets for elections. Thus, he stressed that the Overseas Monitoring Committee (Panwas LN) in 29 countries would closely follow up on the reports received.

“We hope that the 1,750,474 Indonesian citizens registered on the overseas voter list will exercise their rights well, will not fall for hoaxes and will vote with certainty,” he said.

He also assured that if hoax content or fake news circulates in cyberspace, Bawaslu will collaborate with the Ministry of Communication and Information to deal with it. He therefore said that this requires cooperation from all parties, because Bawaslu cannot work alone.

For information, Bawaslu was received directly by Ambassador Kevin Burnett who appreciated Bawaslu’s arrival at the New Zealand embassy. He hopes that by holding discussions related to the 2024 elections with embassy representatives from several countries, there will be a better understanding of the issues Indonesia will face on February 14.

This election discussion took place with the New Zealand Embassy (inter-embassy meeting with IFES). Participants were representatives from the embassies of America, Spain, Canada, Norway, Denmark, European Union, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Mexico, Japan , the Czech Republic, Belgium and Australia.
