Belinda Bencic dives Leylah Annie Fernandez in Miami

Tennis News: Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic started the 2023 Miami Open season with a landslide victory in straight sets.

The ninth seed didn’t face many obstacles when she won a landslide 6-1, 6-1 victory over Canadian tennis player Leylah Annie Fernandez in the second round of the Miami Open.

With the victory, the Tokyo Olympic champions sealed a third consecutive win over 2021 US Open runner-up Annie Fernandez after losing their first two meetings. The two players met three times last season, with the Canadians winning encounters at Roland Garros but the Swiss winning their encounters in Guadalajara and the Billie Jean King Cup.

Throughout the match which lasted 67 minutes, the ninth seed did not face a single break point opportunity and she lost just nine points in seven service games. During that time, Annie Fernandez was smashed five times.

The victory was Bencic’s ninth victory at the Miami Open. This season, he is taking part in the tournament for the seventh time with the best achievement he achieved 12 months ago by qualifying for the semi-finals.

Now the Swiss national is 16-4, but she hasn’t won a game in over a month since beating Ukrainian national Marta Kostyuk in Dubai. She then lost in the second round to Czech national Karolina Muchova and she was knocked out in the second round of the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open against fellow countrywoman Jil Teichmann.

For a spot in the fourth round of the Miami Open, Bencic will next meet Ekaterina Alexandrova. So far, the ninth seed has a 3-2 head-to-head lead, but they haven’t met on hard courts for the past four seasons.

Unlike 18th-seeded Bencic, Alexandrova had to fight hard before toppling host Taylor Townsend 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

In the third round of the Miami Open, two Czech tennis players will meet, namely Karolina Pliskova against Marketa Vondrousova.

17th seed Pliskova beat Chinese tennis player Wang Xinyu 6-2 6-4 and Vondrousova also looked strong as she knocked out 11th seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 6-2.
