Canada confirms 604 cases of monkeypox

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed on Wednesday (20/7) a total of 604 cases of monkeypox in the country.

Monkeypox cases included 320 cases in Quebec, 230 in Ontario, 40 in British Columbia, 12 in Alberta and two in Saskatchewan.

The federal government of Canada announced on Wednesday July 20 that it would provide funding to support a number of community organizations in the fight against monkeypox.

According to PHAC, a number of provinces and regions are reviewing case data in their region. Cases of illness with symptoms that meet the definition of monkeypox will be reported to PHAC for inclusion in the national survey.

Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory performs diagnostic testing for the virus that causes monkeypox.

Furthermore, the laboratory is currently carrying out whole genome sequencing (whole genome sequencing), namely improved fingerprint analysis of monkeypox virus samples from Canada, PHAC said.

Monkeypox is a type of disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans (zoonosis) and cause infection in humans. This disease is generally found in forest areas of Central and West Africa.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this disease is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopox virus family (orthopoxvirus).
