Canada strengthens its support for ASEAN and launches a strategic partnership

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Canada will strengthen its support for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ASEAN's views on the Indo-Pacific (ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific/AOIP) as well as the launch of the ASEAN-Canada strategic partnership.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the ASEAN Summit (ASEAN Summit) on September 5-6, 2023, according to a written statement from the Canadian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday.

Prime Minister Trudeau will meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo to continue cooperation in combating climate change, improving food security and advancing economic relations.

To advance economic relations between Indonesia and Canada, Trudeau will reaffirm Canada's commitment to concluding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Indonesia.

Trudeau will participate in the ASEAN-Canada summit which will officially launch the ASEAN-Canada strategic partnership.

It was also stated that Trudeau supports ASEAN's vision for the Indo-Pacific to advance regional peace and stability, rules-based trade, food security and economic growth that benefits all.

Trudeau will also reaffirm Canada's commitment to strengthening and eliminating trade barriers to create decent jobs and improve the lives of people on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

Since the ASEAN Summit, Trudeau will attend the G20 Summit in India and promote the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in his capacity as co-chair of the SDG Advocates Group.

Apart from this, Trudeau will also fight for collaboration in the areas of climate change, food and energy security, gender equality and improving global health.

“I look forward to meeting with world leaders to discuss the challenges and crises we face today and to ensure a strong economy today and for generations to come,” Trudeau said.

Prime Minister Trudeau's visit to ASEAN, the heart of the Indo-Pacific region, and the Indo-Pacific region will be an opportunity to make progress and achieve results on issues important to Canada and its international partners.

Canada has been and will be a defender of the rules-based international order and the progress of trade and the global economy that depends on those rules and will continue to work with its international partners to address challenges and prepare for opportunities that present themselves.

“We live in an increasingly interconnected world and it is clear that the current crises can only be overcome if we work together,” Trudeau said.
