Denis Shapovalov plans to step out after Wimbledon loss

Tennis News: Denis Shapovalov played in pain during the ATP Tournament but now he admits it’s time for the tennis player to take a break.

The 29th ranked tennis player in the world failed in the fourth round of Wimbledon in the 2023 season. After winning the first set, he instead lost in four sets to Roman Safiullin, quite a disappointing result for the tennis player who s has qualified for the semi-finals of the Grand Slam of the 2019 season.

While acknowledging the high level of play shown by Safiullin in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the 24-year-old said his movement was hampered by knee pain, something he had struggled with for months and previously consulted a doctor about it. .

“I’m glad the pain didn’t appear in the first half, but at the same time it’s hard for me to play tennis,” Shapovalov admitted.

“It’s no surprise that this happened. It’s disappointing. I feel like I played a good match and was lucky this time to reach the quarter-finals. I also have a fever, which doesn’t help at all.”

Earlier this season, the Canadian national missed the Italian Open following media advice regarding the condition of his knee. He hopes the break will give him enough time to recover. If he admits he had a pretty good trip to Wimnledon, he needs to find a way to settle his issues for good.

The Canadian tennis player said he would need at least two months away from the world of tennis to restore the condition of his knee if it did not require surgery. He will talk to his team about how to proceed.

“It should be now. I don’t know. With this result, I have to consider a few things,” Shapovalov replied when asked when he would consider taking a break.

“I think I defended enough points in the third round of Roland-Garros, then in the fourth round here. So maybe it’s time to take a break, try to work through those issues and get back to work in the fall.”

“However, I will miss an important part of the season that I really enjoy, which is the hard-court season in North America. It was very hard, but unfortunately, that’s life.

Shapovalov said he didn’t want to reveal exactly what happened to his knee. Although he later added that the decision to play in recent weeks was based on the fact that it would not get worse, but inflammation in the area would trigger more pain.
