Felix Auger Aliassime has high hopes at Wimbledon

Tennis News: Felix Auger Aliassime arrived at Wimbledon in the 2023 season with a different situation after missing the warm-up tournament with a left knee injury.

The world number 12 will play his first match in more than a month in the first round of Wimbledon, since losing to Fabio Fognini at Roland Garros. He opted out of Halle two weeks ago to protect the recovery process for damaged tendons in his left knee.

“Going into the Grand Slam in London without having played a single match on grass was not my original plan,” Auger Aliassime said.

“But I will probably look back on the next few seasons and say it was an interesting experience because it probably won’t be the last time I arrive in London without having played a tournament before. If I do well in my career , there will be times when I may need to rest my body and prepare for Wimbledon, like Novak has done this season.

“Right now, I feel better and better. I had a few practice matches and I trained well. After so many seasons, I feel like I understand more that the most important thing is that I’m healthy, I feel good physically. And once I did, my game would pick up pretty quickly. I feel my body can handle it better, I can train every day. And if I manage to pass the first rounds, I have the impression of returning to the level where I was in previous seasons, even if I did not play a single tournament before arriving here.

The Canadian said that although his tendons healed completely, he withdrew from Halle because he still felt discomfort on serve and when moving to his left.

“Tendon recovery is not as precise as a fracture in a bone. It has fully recovered, but there is still some inflammation,” Auger Aliassime said.

“Sometimes the problem will come back after a lot of matches or a lot of training. With my team, we really try to overcome it as best we can. We try to give him the right training so that my muscles around improve, that which is still somewhat lacking.

“We try to be as specific as possible, but it’s not an exact science. Even the doctors don’t know exactly how long it will take before I’m in no more pain. But for now, I’m I feel ready and I feel fit to start the tournament. I hope the pain will stop soon rather than nothing, but I think it’s something I will always have to deal with.

Auger Aliassime beat Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Zverev en route to the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals, but he was knocked out in the first round last season against Maxime Cressy. This season, he will start by facing Michael Mmoh.
