Finishing second at the Canadian GP, Hamilton: We are in the right direction

F1 News: Lewis Hamilton had to settle for third. However, the Mercedes driver believes his team is heading in the right direction.

After trailing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at home last time out in Spain, the seven-time world champion finished third on the grid third under the checkered flag at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve via an interesting tussle with Aston rival Martin Alonso.

Hamilton passed Alonso early in the race but fell behind the Spaniard as the race progressed, eventually crossing the line around five seconds apart, with Verstappen 10 seconds further down the road.

“To be honest it’s been a great weekend for us, we’re slowly moving away, I think Astons took a small step forward when they added some improvements but we’re working to bring more progress, but just to get that,” he said after the race.

“The consistency and being on the podium in Montreal, which is an incredible city, we have an incredible crowd here every year, without fail a huge thank you to everyone here,” he added.

Asked where Mercedes needs to improve against Aston Martin and Red Bull up front, Hamilton identified one key area as rear downforce.

“First of all it’s an honor to be here with two world champions, I’m really excited to be third and to be in the game. But unfortunately we didn’t have the pace today , I think where we struggled was that we knew this weekend wasn’t going to be our strongest circuit, because we struggled in the low-speed corners in particular and that’s there I lost to Fernando and Max just on traction from almost every angle.

“We have a lot of work to do, adding rear downforce to the car and being a bit more efficient, but we are still improving and as I said I think we will get there at some point. given. We are on the right track.”
