The German basketball players completed their qualification for the World Cup with their tenth success in the twelfth match as group leaders. In a narrow ‘final’ for the D-season top spot, national coach Gordon Herbert’s side won in Espoo on Monday night (27 February 2023) with a score of 87:81 (46:43) against the Finnish hosts.

Germany and Finland had already qualified for the World Cup before the game. The world championships will take place from August 25 to September 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Herbert is without a professional NBA player again, and Johannes Voigtmann (Armani Milan) is the club’s only professional in the Europa League. Therefore, like in Friday’s win over Sweden in Frankfurt (73:66), a lot of young talent was introduced. Chemnitz’s Jason George, Jonas Richter and Nilsson Weidmann made their debuts against Sweden, and all three also played in Finland.

Captain Voigtman led Finland with 23 points and even just missed a triple-double with nine assists and nine rebounds. In a tight final round, Voigtmann secured the lead with 38 seconds left and then scored a crucial point from the free-throw line.

While Voigtmann, David Kramer (16), Karim Gallo (14) and Jonas Richter (10) scored in double figures, Herbert’s team shone with a solid three-pointer and ended up scoring 15 of their 24 attempts downtown”.

The selection of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) has already booked a ticket for the World Cup in Bamberg in mid-November with a victory over Finland. Both losses came in the opening game of the first group stage against Latvia and Slovenia.

The draw for the World Cup final will take place in Manila on April 29. It is not yet known whether the German national team will play its preliminary group in the Philippines, Indonesia (Jakarta) or Japan (Okinawa). The knockout stage and the final of the World Cup will take place in the Philippines.

FIBA would only like to announce the details of the draw procedure once qualification is complete. It is certain that the USA favorite will follow the knockout round in the Philippines. Each of the three hosts is allowed to choose a guest country. Slovenia will play the group stage in Japan and Canada will play the group stage in Indonesia. Additionally, the placement process in the draw will depend on the team’s position in the official FIBA World Rankings.

Surprisingly, Argentina, vice-world champion, missed the World Cup. In home qualifying, Argentina lost 75:79 to the Dominican Republic, who clinched the last World Cup ticket in the Americas group.

The Serbian basketball player was the last of twelve European teams to qualify for the World Cup. And at the end of the qualifiers, the team of former national coach Svetislav Pesic clearly beat Great Britain with a score of 101:83 on Monday evening in Belgrade.
