Historic world title for German basketball players, even America failed to get bronze

The Philippines won the Basketball World Cup in Japan and Indonesia on Sunday. Germany played in the semi-final against the United States and defeated Serbia in the final. The United States didn’t even win bronze.

Germany made world news on Friday when they beat the United States in the semifinals. Even though the team was without stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry in the tournament, it was incredible action.

Germany reached the final for the first time, beating the top seeds and record holders (five World Cup titles). The first two quarter-finals were tied against Serbia. In the second half, the score was 47-47 in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

In the third quarter, Germany continued to take the lead, led by their star player Dennis Schröder. The Toronto Raptors player scored 28 points to become the Finals MVP.

Until Sunday, Germany’s best result was a third place in 2002. Four years ago, the country was a disappointing eighteenth. Spain, the defending champion, was eliminated last weekend.

After a dramatic loss to Germany, US national coach Steve Kerr’s team had only one consolation final. The Americans were surprisingly disappointed with Canada. The score was tied after four quarters, after which Canada scored in overtime: 127-118.

It was the first World Cup medal for Canada, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31 points, 12 assists) and Dillon Brooks (39 points) in the race for bronze. Both play for clubs in the highest American league, the NBA.

Basketball powerhouse the United States missed out on a World Cup medal for the second time in a row. In 2019, the United States, the reigning world champions, finished seventh, their worst performance since 2002 (sixth).
