Hotter ! US and UK prepare new sanctions against Russia

Jakarta

Leaders of the G7 group of nations plan to toughen sanctions on Russia at their summit in Japan this week. Sources familiar with the matter said the sanctions would target energy and exports contributing to Russia’s war effort.

The new measures will be announced by the leaders at a meeting to be held May 19-21. This tightening of sanctions will aim to avoid sanctions involving third countries. He then seeks to undermine Russia’s future energy production and curb the trade that sustains the Russian military.

Meanwhile, US officials hoped G7 members would agree and adjust their approach to sanctions. All automatic exports are prohibited unless the item is on the list of approved goods.

Currently, all goods are allowed to be sold to Russia unless explicitly blacklisted. These changes could make it harder for Russia to find loopholes.

Meanwhile, the allies have yet to agree on a more restrictive approach. US officials hope the most sensitive region for G7 members will embrace the idea that exports are banned unless they are on a designated list.

The exact areas where these new rules will apply are still under discussion.

“You should expect to see, in some spaces, particularly with regard to Russia’s defense industrial base, this shift in attitude happening,” said a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

For information, the G7 is a group of countries made up of the United States, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.
