Indonesia – Canada CEPA Constructive Bargaining SPK – BSN – National Standards Agency – Indonesian National Standards Agency

Indonesia and Canada have agreed to negotiate to develop free trade cooperation under the Indonesia-Canada Agreement Global partnership agreement (CEPA). The National Standards Body (BSN) participated in the meeting which is entering its fourth round, from February 20 to 24, 2023 and specifically for the area of ​​Standardization and Conformity Assessment (SPK) which took place from February 20-21, 2023 in Bandung, West Java.

At this meeting, the Indonesian delegation was led by the Director of the BSN Standards Implementation and Conformity Assessment System, Konny Sagala, who was accompanied by representatives from the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Trade , from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, and Ministry of Religions (BPJPH), while the Canadian delegation was led by Louise Burden of Global Affairs Canada who was accompanied by representatives of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

In the previous three rounds, Canada submitted draft proposals for kind TBT / STRACAP and in this cycle the whole proposal has been deepened text draft covering in detail issues of standards, technical regulations, conformity assessment procedures, transparency, cooperation and other supporting elements. Both parties provided their views, clarifications and inputs on the proposal based on the system in place in their respective countries. Negotiations proceeded constructively and both sides agreed to continue negotiations in the next round scheduled for mid-2023.

Both sides believed that this bilateral trade cooperation, especially in the area of ​​standardization and conformity assessment, could make a real contribution to facilitating trade between Indonesia and Canada by boosting the economy, including encouraging the development of Indonesian MSMEs to progress.
