Job vacancies in Canada continue to decline in September 2023

OTTAWA (ANTARA) – The number of job vacancies in Canada decreased by 40,700, or 6.1 percent, to 632,200 in September 2023, continuing a steady downward trend after peaking at more than a million in May 2022, Statistics Canada announced Thursday (11/30).

In September, job vacancies in Canada were at their lowest level since February 2021, and total labor demand, which is the number of filled and vacant positions, declined for the third consecutive month, according to the national statistics agency.

The job vacancy rate, which is the number of vacancies as a proportion of total labor demand, fell 0.2 percentage points to 3.6% in September, the lowest level since January 2021, the agency said.

The number of vacant positions decreased in four sectors: accommodation and food services, construction, finance and insurance and public administration.

This decline was partially offset by a higher number of vacancies in educational services, as well as the information and cultural industries, the agency said.

There were 1.9 unemployed people for every vacant position in September, compared to 1.8 in August and 1.2 at the start of 2023. The increase in the ratio of unemployed to vacant positions is explained by the availability of fewer positions vacancies, while the number of unemployed did not change much in September, Statistics Canada said.
