Jokowi welcomes state leaders to the 43rd ASEAN Summit

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) began hosting country leaders at the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit. Jokowi delivered his welcome message in the hall of the ASEAN summit’s main venue.

The G20 summit was held at JCC Senayan in central Jakarta on Tuesday (05/09/2022). Leaders of ASEAN countries and partner countries started heading to the ASEAN summit around 9:35 a.m. WIB.

The country’s leaders got out of the car in front of the JCC Senayan. then welcomed by the Director General of Protocol and Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andy Rachmianto. The leaders were then directed to the lobby and greeted directly by Jokowi and First Lady Iriana.

Jokowi then shook hands with the leaders of the institution. Additionally, Jokowi and the leaders did a photo shoot together.

The country’s first leader to arrive at the ASEAN summit was Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. Next are Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Thai Delegation Chairman Sarun Charoensuwan, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of Timor-Leste Xanana Gusmao, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands Mark Brown, President of Bangladesh Mohammed Shahabuddin and Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah.

22 heads of state to attend ASEAN summit

For information, a total of 22 countries were present, 11 ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Timor-Leste.

Then nine countries were invited, including the Republic of Korea, India, Japan, China, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Russia and the United States.

With the addition of two more countries, namely Bangladesh as the chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Cook Islands as the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).

Indonesia has also invited international organizations from the United Nations (UN), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Economic Forum, IORA and PIF.

The theme of the ASEAN Indonesia Chair 2023 is “ASEAN, the epicenter of growth”. Through this theme, Indonesia wants to ensure that ASEAN is not only an organization whose role is for the region, but also for the world.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo will open the 43rd ASEAN Summit and chair 12 meetings. The series of meetings include the 43rd plenary and retreat summit, the 26th ASEAN-China summit, the 24th ASEAN-South Korea summit, the 26th ASEAN-Japan summit and the 11th ASEAN-US summit.

The other meetings are the ASEAN-Canada Summit, the 26th ASEAN+3 Summit, the 20th ASEAN-India Summit, the 3rd ASEAN-Australia Summit, the 18th East Asia (EAS) Summit and the 13th ASEAN Summit -Union. UN).
