Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and the entire delegation was forced to extend its stay in New Delhi to attend G20 Summit one day because the plane broke down. This information is based on confirmation from Canadian authorities.
Reported by The Guardian, Monday (9/11/2023), Trudeau arrived in India to attend a meeting of leaders of 20 developed countries on Friday (9/8/2023).
He was due to return to Canada on Sunday (10/10/2023) after laying a wreath at a memorial dedicated to Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, but a mechanical breakdown kept him in India overnight.
The Canadian High Commission in New Delhi said the Canadian Air Force which operated the plane had informed the delegation that it was experiencing technical difficulties.
“These issues cannot be resolved overnight, which is why our delegation will remain in India until an alternative solution is found,” he added.
CTV News identified the plane as an Airbus and said it was unclear when it would return, adding that it was not the first time the plane had encountered problems.
Trudeau’s presence at the G20 summit is less eventful than that of some of his G7 counterparts and comes amid tensions between his government and host country India over Ottawa’s handling of right-wing Sikh separatists .
New Delhi has accused Ottawa of turning a blind eye to the activities of radical Sikh nationalist groups seeking to create a separate Sikh homeland in northern India.
Trudeau is not the only world figure to have suffered plane problems in recent months. In August 2023, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was forced to cancel a trip to Oceania after two problems with a government plane forced her to return to Abu Dhabi.
In June, a New Zealand Defense Force plane carrying the country’s Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, to China was deemed so unreliable that a backup plane was forced to fly in as backup.
