PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen secure 2023 Canada Open semifinals

Badminton News: Commonwealth Games champions PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen recorded contrasting victories to advance to the semi-finals of the Canada Open World Tour Super 500 badminton tournament.

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu stamped her authority over Fang Jie to record her first victory in four encounters over her opponent by topping the margins 21-13 21-7 in the women’s singles quarter-finals on Saturday (8/7) early Saturday.

Sindhu looked more alert as she took a 5-1 lead from the start. His smash and drop was the troubled Fang Jie, who also made a lot of unforced errors. The Indian entered the break with an 11-6 advantage.

Sindhu was quick on his feet and covered ground well, returning anything thrown at him with ease. With shuttlecocks hitting the net several times, Fang Jie cut the deficit to 10-14 and then 12-16 but Sindhu finished it off with two smashes.

Game two started in a draw with Fang Jie leading a narrow 5-3 at one point, but Sindhu quickly turned the tide, reaching the interval at 11-5 with his opponent and continuing to score.

It was mostly one-sided as Sindhu put his opponent to work, dominating the rally to continue. Seeking precision, China lost the line and quickly handed India the game with two clean fouls.

Sindhu will next face world number one Yamaguchi of Japan.

The 28-year-old from Hyderabad has a lucrative 14-10 record against top seeds Japan, who beat the Indians when they last met at this year’s Singapore Open.

Then, Lakshya Sen ended the heated battle of German qualifier Julien Carraggi with a 21-8, 17-21, 21-10 rubber game battle in the men’s singles quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Sen takes on Japan’s fourth seed Kenta Nishimoto. Sen, meanwhile, is 1-1 against Nishimoto, most recently against him at the 2022 Japan Open.
