Moscow – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday February 16, 2024 described the death in prison of Moscow critic Alexeï Navalny as a tragedy. He also called Russian President Vladimir Putin a monster.

“It’s a tragedy,” Trudeau told public broadcaster CBC.

“It really shows how far Putin will go to suppress anyone who fights for the freedom of the Russian people. And it's something that reminds the whole world what a monster Putin is,” he continued.

In an NDTV report on Saturday, February 17, 2024, Russian authorities previously said that Navalny died suddenly in his Arctic prison.

The surprise announcement comes as Putin prepares to extend his mandate by two decades in March presidential elections.

Navalny, a charismatic lawyer, is widely seen as Russia's main opposition leader and the only politician capable of rallying large crowds and standing up to Putin.

Speaking to a group of Canadian business leaders, Trudeau praised Navalny's extraordinary courage in defending the fundamental freedoms of democracy.

He urged Canadians to increase their resolve to defend these values and stand up to Putin, particularly when it comes to Ukraine.
