JAKARTA Helicopter A Bell 412 belonging to the Indonesian military crashed and caught fire in Ciwidey, Rancabali, Bandung Regency, West Java on Sunday, May 28, 2023. A few months earlier, a helicopter of the same type also had an accident.

The Bell 412 is a multipurpose helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter Textron. This helicopter is a development of the Bell 212 model, the main difference being the 4 composite main rotors.

This multi-purpose helicopter was first introduced in 1968. The main user of the Bell 412 helicopter is the US military. Besides America, several countries also use similar helicopters, including Canada, the United Kingdom and Indonesia.

In its development, Bell Helicopter Textron and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) were marked in 2012 by the signing of the industrial and commercial agreement (ICA) and the certified maintenance center (CMC).

Four years later, Bell and PTDI renewed the agreement which allowed both parties to extend support and services to Bell helicopter operators. PT DI then produced tail booms, door assemblies, door pillars, pylons and ducts for Bell 412 and Huey II helicopters.

Armed with a license from Bell Helicopter Textron, PTDI later manufactured the Bell 412EP (performance enhancement) helicopter for use by the Indonesian Army (AD). According to the official PTDI website, one of the advantages of this mid-class helicopter is that it can fly fast with minimal noise.

PTDI continues to develop this Bell 412 helicopter. The most recent variant is the Bell 412EPI which was completed in 2021. The Army Aviation Center (Puspenerbad) collectible helicopter is operated by 11/Serbu Squadron.

Here are the specifications of the Bell 412 helicopter:
