Starbucks will sell fake meat sandwiches in Canada

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Starbucks stores in Canada will start selling Beyond Meat, a breakfast sandwich made with plant-based “meat” next week. This is the first time the cafe has offered imitation meat products, as Reuters reports.

The Seattle-based company said the Beyond Meat sandwich, with cheddar and egg, will be available in 1,200 cafes across Canada starting March 3.

This menu was jointly created by Starbucks and Beyond Meat. The “meat” is brown rice and peas mixed with spices like oregano, basil, rosemary and fennel, as cited by Forbes.

Starbucks has worked to build a food business that currently generates at least 20 percent of revenue from company-operated stores. Starbucks is also looking to increase its plant-based offerings to make them more environmentally friendly.

Although it has long sold a meat-free menu, this is the first time Starbucks has offered plant-based “fake meat” instead of animal protein.
