Surprises from European players at the 2023 Canada Open

Badminton News: Despite grief and fatigue after the European Games, several athletes who were in Poland last week joined other European players and players from around the world in Calgary, Canada to compete in the YONEX Canada Open 2023.

Two days into the tournament, the European players put in an excellent performance in the first round of the main draw.

Julien Carraggi continued his stellar year of achievement with an impressive performance at the YONEX 2023 Canadian Open.

After going through two qualifying rounds, the Belgian faced the Japanese Kanta Tsuneyama, currently ranked 14th in the world. Carraggi emerged victorious by winning three games, 21-16, 19-21 and 21-15.

Moving on to the round of 16, she will face Israeli Misha Zilberman, with a chance to advance to the quarter-finals to clinch a medal on her Super 500 tournament debut.

In another sensational upset, Germany’s Fabian Roth picked up a stunning win over two-time world champion Kento Momota. Roth won against his Japanese opponent in consecutive matches, 21-17, 21-16.

The road ahead will certainly not be easy as he faces China’s Li Shi Feng in today’s round of 16.

Jan Louda, playing his opener in the main draw, started well against China’s Weng Hong Yang. The Czech player won in consecutive matches, 22-20, 21-12.

Today, Louda will face world No. 4 player Kodai Naraoka of Japan in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Canada Open.
